Guatemala from 33,000 km: Contemporary Art, 1960-Present is the result of a groundbreaking endeavor to showcase Guatemalan art of the last fifty years in a coherent and comprehensive narrative to an international audience. This publication documents the exhibition at Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara (MCASB) from September to December 2017, as part of the Getty Foundation's Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA initiative. Reflecting the exhibition's structure, it includes chapters on Art and Politics; Violence and Trauma; Land, Landscape, and Territory; Art Histories; Formal Experimentation; Gender Perspectives; Popular Culture; Religion, Spirituality, and Metaphysics; and Racisms and Identities.

This book features artwork in a range of media that traces the tumultuous history of Guatemala since the mid-twentieth century, and provides a visual record of many works that have been undocumented in print and unseen outside of Guatemala. The nearly ninety works are accompanied by introductions to this context and to the development of the country's artistic scene by the exhibition's curators: Miki Garcia and Emiliano Valdés. A number of curators, historians, and writers elaborate on the central themes and ideas in the contemporary art of Guatemala in critical detail, including Rosina Cazali, Martín Fernández-Ordóñez, Silvia Herrera Ubico, and Mario Roberto Morales.

Published by Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara, in conjunction with the exhibition Guatemala from 33,000 km: Contemporary Art, 1960-Present (presented at Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara, Ridley-Tree Museum of Art at Westmont College, and Community Arts Workshop).
